We would like to share an email received by a taxpayer that shows exactly what a fraudulent email that claims to be from the Canada Revenue Agency looks like. Taxpayers should be extremely vigilant when they receive emails, phone calls, text message or mail that claims to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. Email and phone scams are prevalent at the moment, with email being used to offer fictitious refunds and phone calls being used to demand payment for fictitious debts. The scams are designed to obtain your personal information, such as your social insurance number, credit card number, bank account number or passport number.
Taxpayers are encouraged to ignore these communications, to avoid clicking on any email links and to avoid providing any personal information over the phone. Please call your accountant or the Canada Revenue Agency at 1-800-959-8281 to confirm any refunds or debts owed. For more information on how to protect yourself against fraud, check out this Canada Revenue Agency page.
